How Long Do Major Home Appliances Last? Lifespan Data by Brand

Real-world longevity expectations for modern appliances to help you gauge your unit's remaining lifespan.

Why Lifespan Varies

No two appliances age identically. Expected lifespan data represents the median outcome across a large population of units. Actual lifespan in any individual household varies based on usage intensity, maintenance history, water quality, local climate, and brand and build quality.

Refrigerator Lifespan

Expected lifespan: 10 – 13 years

The refrigerator is the hardest-working appliance in your home — it runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Smart and connected refrigerators with complex electronics trend toward the shorter end of this range. Regular coil cleaning every 6-12 months and proper door seal maintenance extend lifespan toward the upper range.

Repair decision context: A refrigerator in year 4-8 with a moderate repair cost is generally worth fixing. A refrigerator past year 10 with a major component failure — compressor, sealed system, main control board — is approaching replacement territory regardless of repair cost.

Washing Machine Lifespan

Expected lifespan: 10 – 11 years

Front-load washers offer better energy efficiency but have a structural vulnerability — the drum bearing. Front-load bearings are subject to significantly more mechanical stress than top-load agitator mechanisms, and bearing failure is one of the most expensive washer repairs. Front-load models trend toward the lower end of the range. A bearing failure on a front-load washer past year 7 is one of the clearest replace signals in the appliance category.

Clothes Dryer Lifespan

Expected lifespan: 10 – 13 years

Dryers are mechanically simpler than washers and tend to outlast them. Gas dryers consistently trend toward the longer end of the lifespan range. Dryer lifespan is more maintenance-sensitive than any other appliance category — a clogged dryer vent forces the heating element and motor to work harder, dramatically accelerating wear. Annual vent cleaning is the single highest-ROI maintenance action for dryer longevity.

Dishwasher Lifespan

Expected lifespan: 9 – 10 years

Dishwashers have the shortest expected lifespan of any major kitchen appliance. Control board failures show a statistically significant increase after year 7. Bosch dishwashers consistently outperform the category average with documented lifespans of 10-12 years in multiple reliability studies.

Range and Oven Lifespan

Expected lifespan: Gas 13-15 years, Electric 11-13 years

Ranges and ovens have the longest expected lifespan of any major kitchen appliance. Gas ranges consistently outlast electric models. Connected ranges with touchscreen controls and wifi connectivity introduce electronic failure points that traditional ranges do not have — early data suggests smart ranges may trend 2-3 years shorter than their non-connected equivalents.

How Lifespan Affects the AM Score

ApplianceMath uses category-specific lifespan data — not a universal number — to calculate your AM Score. A 9-year-old refrigerator (well within its 10-13 year range) scores very differently from a 9-year-old dishwasher (at the end of its 9-10 year range) even if the repair cost is identical. The age ratio in the AM Score is: Your Appliance Age ÷ Category Lifespan. Same age. Very different financial context. The AM Score captures that difference. A flat rule does not.

Key Takeaways

  • Refrigerator: 10-13 years (smart models trend shorter)
  • Washer: 10-11 years (front-load bearings reduce lifespan)
  • Dryer: 10-13 years (gas trends longer, vent maintenance critical)
  • Dishwasher: 9-10 years (control board failures increase after year 7)
  • Range — Gas: 13-15 years (longest lifespan of any kitchen appliance)
  • Range — Electric: 11-13 years (smooth-top models trend shorter)
  • Microwave (over-range): 9 years
